Drake to skip Oscars, Grammys: Here’s why

A star has stepped out of the spotlight, just as the Billboard-leading Drake prepares to host his seventh consecutive annual holiday-themed Radio Disney Music Awards. According to The New York Times , Drake has decided to decline his nomination as Best Rap Album for his seventh studio album “Scorpion.” He cited disagreements with Grammy officials over his critics; the album’s soundtrack includes his collaborative effort with Childish Gambino “Elevate.” As per its rules, Drake can submit additional nomination categories in the future, if he wishes.

Earlier this month, he and Gambino were nominated for a total of 14 Grammy awards. The rapper was up for nine awards — already the third-highest number of nominations of all time.

Drake’s decision comes just days after Kendrick Lamar was nominated for 10 Grammy awards.

In 2017, he was joined by Drake and his girlfriend, Serena Williams, as the first couple to be nominated for an Academy Award , for “Love & Basketball.” As of November 2017, Drake and Serena Williams have not been nominated for an Oscar.

In October 2017, Drake donated $100,000 to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

With that in mind, here are three things we need to know about Drake’s new stance.

He will not release any music until 2020

In an Instagram post he made Sunday, Drake wrote he won’t be releasing any music until 2020. “After January, I’m going to take a long break from music to clear my head, focus on my family, community and overall well-being. I have a lot to say but want to think about it before I speak. All love,” he wrote.

His proteges have reportedly voiced concern

TMZ reports that Drake’s top producers — including Noah “40” Shebib, Boi-1da and Nineteen85 — have expressed anxiety about Drake’s announcement and want him to delay the announcement.

He’ll apparently have a lot of freedom

The rapper reportedly has stated that his mindset has been changed. Drake’s lawyer told TMZ: “Drake is deeply appreciative of the love and support of all his fans, but until his well-being and healing are assured, he is restricted from resuming a full personal and creative life.

“This has been made clear to the Recording Academy.”
